Commissioned in 2005 by Dr. Kenneth Martin, the texts for these seven songs come from the writings of St. John the Apostle. The theme of God’s love pervades throughout the cycle. The songs display many stylistic traits of contemporary music—shifting and assymetrical meters, bi-tonalities, dissonant harmony—yet they are always lyrical and fit the voice beautifully. The piano accompaniments are an integral aspect and have an equal role in the expression of the message of each song. In the Beginning, (John 1:1) crashes open with a ffff forearm tone cluster on the piano to represent the cacophony of Creation. For God So Loved the World, (John 3:16) begins with a bi-tonal statement of “God loves, “ then moves to a beautifully lyric melody to this familiar Scripture passage. A New Commandment (John 13) begins with the piano in a quick, rhythmic ostinato with the vocal passages in legato contrast; the middle section is in 5/4 meter, with the vocal line in a monotone chant over walking piano ostinato. That Which Was From The Beginning (1 John 1-2) is modal. Beloved, Let Us Love One Another, (John 4:7) is expressive and warm. Lo, A Throne Stood In Heaven (Rev. 4) uses extreme dissonance to signify the mysticism of heaven. Then I Saw A New Heaven (Revelation 21) has the piano in shimmering arpeggios with a transcendent melodic line. Suitable for vocal recitals and the concert stage.
