The Gettysburg Address captures the essence of this famous speech. The movement opens with a fugal statement of "Fourscore and seven years ago...." A much slower and expressive section quotes, "We have come to dedicate a portion of this field as a final resting place...." The basses have a cello-like ostinato that lends depth and richness as the upper parts sing a beautiful chorale-like passage of this profound text. Four soloists have a contrapuntal quartet, "It is for us the living to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us...," while the choir reiterates the text in a rhythmic unison. The movement closes with a driving, rhythmic, 8-part passage in close harmony, ìof the people, by the people, for the people...," to the triumphant conclusion, ìthis nation shall not perish from the earth."
