With Malice Toward None - Gettysburg Address

Capturing the profound essence of Lincoln's famous speech, The Gettysburg Address, the movement opens with a fugal statement of "Fourscore and seven years ago..." A much slower and expressive section quotes "...we have come to dedicate a portion of this field as a final resting place..." The basses have a cello-like ostinato that lends depth and richness as the upper voices sing a beautiful chorale-like passage of this profound text. Four soloists have a contrapuntal quartet "...it is for us the living to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us..." while the choir reiterates the text in a rhythmic unison. The movement closes with a driving, rhythmic, 8-part divisi passage in close harmony "...of the people, by the people, for the people..." to the triumphant conclusion "...this nation shall not perish from the earth."  This powerful section would be a spectacular addition to any patriotric program.
