The third movement opens with the cacophony of war. Each voice part sings snippets of Dixie and Battle Hymn of the Republic, juxtaposed upon each other, while the instruments are in tonal opposition. The Proclamation of Emancipation is then quoted in chant-like open fifths. This text cites the legal resolution of the slavery issue. The music then moves into a contemporary spiritual with the text that gives the moral resolution of slavery "...some folks think their ways be right, ain't no wrong in day or night; we're all God's children here on earth" Extremely versatile as an anthem, this movement can be performed three ways - completely as written; the Proclamation section and the spiritual, or the spiritual by itself. The spiritual is an excellent selection for church and high school choirs and Black History Month programs. View Sample Score (220,17 KB) |
