Based on the text taken from Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, the final movement echoes the opening bars of the first movement and transcends to a hopeful, hymn-like section. The middle section has each voice part, each instrument, and the bass and soprano solos enter with their own ostinato of "...fondly do we hope, and fervently we pray..." The dissonance of the layered ostinati explodes into a unison shout "...that this mighty scourge of war will speedily pass away." The cantata ends with an impassioned majestic prayer that "...we may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among all nations." View Sample Score (203,35 KB) |
