The final movement echoes the opening bars of the first movement, then moves to a hopeful, hymn-like section. The text is taken from Lincolnís Second Inaugural Address. The middle section has each voice part, each instrument, and the bass and soprano solos enter with their own ostinato to "fondly do we hope, and fervently we pray..." The near- cacophony of the layered ostinati explodes into a unison shout... "that this mighty scourge of war will speedily pass away." The cantata ends with a majestic prayer that ìwe may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among all nations." View Sample Score (203,35 KB) |
