An overwhelming cacophony of war opens the third movement. Each voice part sings snippets of Dixie and Battle Hymn of the Republic, harmonically juxtaposed upon each other, while the instruments are in tonal opposition. The Proclamation of Emancipation is then quoted in chant-like open fifths while the text cites the legal resolution of the slavery issue. The music then transitions to a contemporary spiritual with the text that gives the moral resolution of slavery "...some folks think their ways be right, ain't no wrong in day or night; we're all God's children here on earth..." Extremely versatile as an anthem, this movement can be performed three ways-- as written; the Proclamation section wtih the spiritual, or the spiritual by itself. The spiritual is an excellent selection for church, community and school choirs, particularly in celebration of Black History Month programs. View Sample Score (220,17 KB) |
