This work is a unique and appealing medley of six international carols. Flute and piano open the music with a lively duet of the Ukrainian Bell Carol and use motifs from this duet to bridge from one carol to another. Women’s and men’s voices antiphonally sing the opening phrases of Il est né then come together in harmony in the closing phrase. Gloria In Excelsis Deo, from Poland, adds excitement with its quick and lively tempo. Christ Is Coming, a Russian carol, brings dancing lightness to the medley followed by Sleep, My Baby (Suo Gan), a Welsh lullaby, which features an alto solo on the stanzas with the choir on the refrain. The mood and tempo shift from the gentle lullaby to the upbeat A Child Is Born In Bethlehem (Et barn er fodt I Betlehem) a Scandinavian carol, featuring a medium range solo with the choir and finishing with a majestic polyphonic “Alleluia” section.
